Almost Myself: June 10th, 2010

Event: Medical placement

Outfit: White shirt: JCPenney (handed down from Mom); Grey pants: The Limited; Black rosette flats: Target; Black braided belt: Forever 21; Pin: Made by Anna

First of all, check out the pin! After making me the purple flower pin for the bachelorette party, Anna was on a roll and made this beauty as well. Love the rope, chains, bronze.

The pin helped me feel more like myself today. It’s not as though I hate classic clothing pieces—I can appreciate a white button-down, a nice pair of slacks. But the accessories are what give the look some individuality; I’d guess almost everyone in the working world owns slacks and a white shirt. Yay for belts, pins, and headbands, etc. Note: These are early morning shots. When I wear my hair wavy I usually leave the house with it slightly damp and let it finish up drying (/gettin’ wavy volume) on the way to work. Seems to work out on days when more than a 4-minute session with the hairdryer is not going to happen!

I’m having another very sleepy and sore day, but it was also a good one. Learned a lot of the paperwork at the rehab center, which is going to be overwhelming, but my supervisor also built some paperwork time into my schedule for tomorrow. Patients today were all good. I’m starting to feel like I’m getting the hang of things there more and more, especially as I now mostly see the same patients 3-5 days per week.

I won’t claim it’s the most cheerful experience in the world—seeing people dealing with the aftermath of strokes, brain tumors, and devastating diagnoses is not exactly uplifting on its own. But developing those relationships, giving them communication strategies they can truly use at home, sharing lots o’ little jokes, seeing progress…they all help make up for it. I suspect my passion and bigger knowledge-base will always be with the little ones, but people over 65 certainly can rock, too. This placement makes me feel sad I don’t have any grandparents every day; I would be all for just listening to awesome stories from decades long ago all day (which I just get little snippets of in this role).

I’m getting excited for the weekend! Get to see Adam after 2 weeks apart, attend a house-warming party for a relative on Saturday, Beer Run in Milwaukee on Sunday. Should be good—-might also have some time to get the aforementioned paperwork done! Ooh—and sleep!
